Schema markup is how you speak Google's language
Search engines read your page, but they are guessing at what things mean. Is "Lagos" a location, a topic, or part of a name? Is that number a price or a phone number? Schema markup removes the guessing. It is a small block of code that labels your content using a shared vocabulary every major search engine understands, and increasingly, so do AI answer engines.
Why it matters more every year
- Rich results. Star ratings, FAQ drop-downs, business panels, and event listings all come from schema. They take up more space in search and earn more clicks.
- AI citations. Tools like Google's AI Overviews and other answer engines lean on structured data to understand and quote sources accurately. Clear schema makes you easier to cite.
- Clarity. Even without a rich result, schema helps search engines categorize your page correctly, which supports the right rankings.
Which type for which page
| Page | Best schema type |
|---|---|
| Homepage / contact | LocalBusiness or Organization |
| Blog post / guide | Article or BlogPosting |
| Product / shop page | Product |
| Service page | Service |
| FAQ or any Q&A section | FAQPage |
| Any page in a section | BreadcrumbList |
| Event or webinar | Event |
A few rules to stay safe
- Only mark up what is on the page. Schema must reflect real, visible content, fake reviews or hidden FAQs can get you penalized.
- One main type per page is usually enough. You can combine, for example Article plus Breadcrumb, but do not overdo it.
- Always validate. Paste your page into Google's Rich Results Test after adding schema to confirm it is error-free.

Schema markup, answered
Schema markup (also called structured data) is code you add to a page that tells search engines exactly what your content is: a business, a product, an FAQ, an event, and so on. It uses a shared vocabulary from Schema.org, written as JSON-LD. Google and AI assistants read it to understand and display your content more richly.
JSON-LD is the format Google officially recommends for structured data. It sits in a small script in your page, separate from your visible content, so it is clean and easy to manage. This tool generates valid JSON-LD you can paste straight into your page, no need to touch your HTML structure.
Schema does not directly raise rankings, but it makes you eligible for rich results: star ratings, FAQ drop-downs, business info panels, event listings, and more. These take up more space and earn more clicks. It also helps AI search tools understand and cite your content accurately, which matters more every year.
Paste the full script into the head section of your page, or use your theme or SEO plugin's custom code or schema field. In WordPress with Elementor you can add it via an HTML widget or the page's custom code area. After adding it, test the page in Google's Rich Results Test to confirm it is valid.
Use the type that matches the page. A homepage or contact page suits LocalBusiness or Organization; a blog post suits Article; a shop page suits Product; a list of questions suits FAQPage; a service page suits Service. You can add more than one type across your site, one per page is usually enough.
